Summer heat prompts your pet to get hot and dehydrated. In prolonged heat, they may become weary and faint. Therefore, here are some solutions to your problems.

Dog Owners Seeking Guidance on How to Take Care of Their Pet

Summertime is full of thrilling activities for dogs, like chasing squirrels in the backyard, drinking from sprinklers, and going on vacations with your family. After romping too much,  your dog starts panting. That's when they regulate their heat after playing in the hot summer. Beside that, you can take steps to keep your dog cool at any time or place.

1. Make sure that your dog has a sheltered spot with a cool surface to lie on if they like playing in the backyard.

2. To keep your dog cool, you can regulate the temperature in your home by switching on the fan or the air conditioner.

3.  Buy a cooling mat or some specialized clothing for your pet to keep them cool all summer long, such as cooling vests, booties, and goggles.

4. Most importantly, while it's hot out, your dog needs a steady supply of water. You should keep their water bowl filled with fresh, clean water or you can add some little ice cubes.

5. Remember to bring a collapsible bowl or portable water bottle along with them when taking your pet on a vacation trip.

6. Temperatures tend to be hottest from 11 am till 4 pm. Therefore, you shouldn't keep your dog outside during the aforementioned time.

Solutions to Take Care of Your Cats in Hot Summer

Similar to dogs, cats are prone to a variety of major health issues in summer. Besides dehydration, your kitten may have some of the following problems: loss of appetite, exhaustion, loss of heat, or a high risk of feline lice and flea infestations.

Skin burns and sunburn, especially in white cats

Cats enjoy lying in the sun. But when they stay in the sun for a long time with high temperature, cats can constantly get burned and sunburned, especially with those who have light-colored fur.

Sunburned cats reveal some symptoms like: red, peeling spots on the skin in some areas such as their nose, mouth, ears… Therefore, if your cat often runs around in the sun, remember to apply a little sunscreen to the cat's nose and ears. When you discover some small burns appear on the cat, please apply some ointment on it.

Dehydration on cats

Even cats fed wholly on moisture-rich wet cat food meals (usually comprised of around 80% water), can fail to take in enough water to meet their needs, especially in hot weather. Cats are easily dehydrated with manifestations such as fatigue, lethargy, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, and less elastic skin. At that time, the cat needs to be brought in cool and constantly watered. Therefore, make sure that your cat is always provided with enough water at all times and in suitable places.

Heatstroke in cats

Just like humans and dogs, cats can be affected by high temperatures. Heatstroke and heat exhaustion are serious conditions that can occur in any animal.

Cats do not pant until they are in difficulty and they don't sweat to stay cool.  To stay cool, cats tend to move to cooler areas like tile floors, sinks, or tubs. Self-grooming can imitate sweating and provide some cooling and cats' coats provide some protection from the heat, although this is only partially effective. Especially, in some dangerously hot situations, their body cannot cool down fast enough to prevent overheating.

Older cats, kittens, or cats that get stuck in hot areas like a greenhouse, garage, shed, car, outdoors, or even a clothes dryer are more susceptible to heatstroke because they are even less capable of regulating their temperatures than normal cats.

The best thing to do if you suspect heatstroke is to get your cat to the nearest open veterinary facility right away. Call the hospital or clinic when you are on the way to get advice about safe cooling methods.

You may be able to check your cat's body temperature to assess the severity of the situation. If their body temperature is over 104 degrees, you may be able to administer cooling methods at home. Keep in mind that your cat will still need to see a veterinarian.
